I decided to develop a new lettering system for the lettercut work that will be showing at Aspex.
As Aspex is housed in 19 century structure, I sought out letter-forms contemporary to the building. In a churchyard in Islington, I found an incredible inscription, a brilliant example of a style of lettering the victorians loved.
I’ve used this as the basis for my new lettering system. Having documented the inscription, I worked at understanding their construction drawing the forms, thinking about balance and form, gradually building up my own alphabet. Here’s a few sketches of how it’s going.
