University of Portsmouth Geology visit

The Aspex team kindly introduced me to Nick Koor, Principal Lecturer in the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Portsmouth.

Nick took time out of his day to give me a tour of the department at one of only a handful of academic institutions specialising in engineering geology. Over a coffee we shared our interest in engaging people in what lies beneath our feet, the unique geology that shapes the UK and the UK’s unique role in shaping geology as it is understood today.

Having talked about my experiences of visiting some of the UK quarries supporting my work and seeing the scale of quarrying, Nick provided a great contrast by letting me look at up-close at a range of native stones under microscope using cross polarised light, seeing ooliths and shells in intimate detail. Images below are of olivine-rich metamorphic rock from the upper mantle .
